We need your help.

Many of you may have seen or read about the KC Tenants Bill of Rights that is being considered by the city council. If passed, this bill of rights would limit our ability to screen tenants by not allowing us to consider eviction history, criminal history or credit history. It would also limit security deposits, require landlords to provide details about past issues with properties and the cost of utilities, limit a landlords ability to enter their property, provide relocation assistance to tenants who are evicted and limit a landlord's ability to terminate a rental agreement with a tenant unless they don't pay the rent or violate a lease clause.

In addition to all of those regulations the bill of rights would also use taxpayer money to fund free legal services to all low income tenants and fund a department to act as tenant advocate. This department would educate tenants, provide legal support and could revoke landlord permits if a tenants rights are violated.

Landlords Inc has banded together with multiple other groups to fight this ordinance. We are meeting with council members and presenting our own proposals. We will need your help. There will be a meeting on November 6th to debate the ordinance in the Housing Committee. We will send out an e-mail next week once the time and location are finalized. We will let you know the specifics of the meetings, the talking points and council member contact information so that even if you can't attend, you can let your elected representatives know how you feel.

There are a lot of landlords in this city and we need to use our numbers. If you know landlords that are not members of a group let them know what is going on and how they can get involved.
